Mystara
Mystara is the campaign setting that grew out of modules for the Basic / Expert and (BECMI) box sets. A set of Gazetteers added even more flavor and detail to the known world. The setting references Dave Arneson’s original Blackmoor campaign, including several Blackmoor modules written by Dave Arneson.
Campaign Concept and Flavor
The idea is to run an old school campaign using a combination 1st edition D&D and DDC modules and adventures.
Since this is a Dungeon Crawl Classics campaign, this version of Mystara will likely have smaller human and demi-human populations.
Conventions and House Rules
Attacks of Opportunity
The core rulebook has opposing statements regarding attacks of opportunity.
The introduction states –
“DCC RPG does not have prestige classes, attacks of opportunity, feats, or skill points.”
Later on page 95, a section covering the rule for Withdrawl states –
“Once a character is engaged in melee, he cannot back away without opening himself up to attack. If a character or monster withdraws from an active melee – whether to retreat, move to a new position, or attempt some action – his opponents immediately receive a single free attack.”
Attacks of opportunity tend to lock down the battlefield. In favor of a dynamic battlefield, I prefer the following:
If a player character or non-player character has an unused action in a round, they can choose to spend their action when an opponent withdraws. This is their action for the round. Coming to their initiative turn in the round, they would still have a move action, but the attack action is already spent.
Some groups use a Fighting Withdrawal where a character can back up while still fighting, up to half their movement distance, without triggering an opportunity attack.
A combination of these two rules may make sense.
